The environmental case for pallet reuse and recycling is compelling when you examine the numbers. The wood pallet industry is actually one of the most successful examples of a circular economy in any sector. Approximately 95 percent of all wood pallets in the United States are recycled in some form at the end of their useful life, whether through direct reuse, repair and recirculation, or material recovery. This rate far exceeds the recycling rates for most other packaging materials.
Consider these statistics: manufacturing a single new wood pallet requires approximately 12 to 15 board feet of lumber. The average tree yields roughly 250 board feet of lumber, meaning about 17 to 20 pallets per tree. With over 500 million new pallets produced annually in the US, the industry consumes roughly 25 to 30 million trees per year. By recycling and reusing pallets, the industry saves an estimated 5 to 7 million additional trees that would otherwise be needed. Each reuse cycle of a pallet saves approximately 60 percent of the energy that would be required to produce a new one.
The carbon footprint savings are equally significant. A new standard 48 by 40 wood pallet has a carbon footprint of approximately 25 to 30 kilograms of CO2 equivalent when you account for forestry, manufacturing, and transportation. Reconditioning a used pallet produces only 5 to 8 kilograms of CO2 equivalent. For a business that uses 10,000 pallets per year, switching from all-new to recycled pallets can reduce their carbon footprint by 200 to 250 metric tons of CO2 annually, which is equivalent to taking about 50 cars off the road for a year.
Landfill diversion is another critical benefit. Despite high recycling rates, wood pallets still represent roughly 10 percent of all wood waste in municipal landfills. By participating in pallet recycling programs, businesses help ensure that this valuable resource stays in productive use rather than occupying landfill space. Even pallets that cannot be repaired contribute value through material recovery: dismantled pallet wood is used for mulch, animal bedding, biomass energy, and composite wood products.
